Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories include places where the African American story unfolds. Sites of memories include ports where the slave ship disembarked, battle fields where African descendants shed their blood in the struggle for freedom, Historically Black Colleges and Universities where education was pursued and communities created over centuries of African socio economic labor. The imprint of Americans of African descent is deeply embedded in the narrative of the American past, and these sites help us remember. According to the US National Parks Service there are close to two hundred African American historical landmarks spread across 40 states.
